Zahara Nampewo is a Ugandan lawyer teaching at the School of Law, Makerere University in Uganda. She heads the Human Rights and Peace Centre (HURIPEC), a unit of the School of Law that undertakes human rights programmes within the university as well as outreach programmes with other communities other than the academia. Dr. Nampewo received her SJD from Emory University in the United States. She holds an LLM (Human Rights) from the University of Nottingham in the United Kingdom and an advanced Diploma in Human Rights Protection from Abo Akademi University, Turku, Finland. Dr. Nampewo's areas of interest and expertise include human rights, health, gender and transitional justice. She teaches Health Law, International Humanitarian Law, Human Rights and Gender. Dr. Nampewo has published on a range of subjects including sexuality, decentralisation and access to justice. Her recent publications include: ‘Local Council Courts and Access to Justice in Uganda, Reality or Rhetorical, East African Journal on Peace and Human Rights 2016, Vol. 22 No.1; ˜Young women with disabilities and access to HIV/AIDS interventions in Uganda, Journal on Reproductive Health Matters (March 2017), Til Violence Do us Part. A Critical Analysis of the Legal Regime of Cruelty as a Ground for Divorce in Uganda, a book chapter in Maria Nassali (Ed) ‘The Politics of Putting Asunder. Divorce, Law and the Family in Uganda, Fountain Publishers 2016, and ‘We have a Right to Love. The Right to Marry and Reproduce for Women with Disabilities in Uganda (upcoming, December 2017). Dr. Nampewo is Board Chairperson of Chapter Four Uganda and Uganda Lawyers for Human Rights (ULHR), both citizen rights NGOs advocating for good governance and human rights of marginalized groups in Uganda. She is also a Board member of the African Centre for Media Excellence (ACME), a non-profit professional organisation based in Uganda that is committed to excellence in journalism in Africa. She is Chief Editor of the East African Journal on Peace and Human Rights, an international, peer-reviewed, bi-annual scholarly publication of the department of Human Rights and Peace Centre (HURIPEC) of the School of Law, Makerere University, as well as a member of the Editorial Advisory Board of Mawazo Journal of Makerere University College of Humanities and Social Sciences. Additionally, Dr. Nampewo is a member on the Forum of Children, Youth and Families of the Uganda National Academy of Sciences, an eminent body of scientists providing independent evidence based advice for the prosperity of Uganda.
