Professor Toyin Ayodele AROWOLO was born in Ijebu Ode, Ogun State. He attended Ijebu Muslim College, Ijebu Ode between 1964 and 1970 for his Secondary and Higher School Certificate education. After working at the Nigerian Breweries Limited Headquarters, Iganmu, Apapa, Lagos for five years, Prof Arowolo proceeded to England where he obtained the B. Sc. (Honours) Chemistry degree in Second Class Upper Division from North London Polytechnic (now London Metropolitan University) in 1980.
He bagged the M. Sc. Analytical Chemistry and Instrumentation degree from the Loughborough University of Technology, Loughborough, England in 1981 (Ogun State Government Scholar) and a Ph. D. degree in Analytical/Environmental Chemistry from Aberdeen University, UK in 1993 (Commonwealth Academic Staff Scholar). Prof. Arowolo had his postdoctoral research training at the Department of Environment, University of York, England (Royal Society Developing World Study Visit Fellow) and also at the International Centre for Environmental and Nuclear Sciences (ICENS), University of West Indies, Mona, Kingston, Jamaica (Third World Academy of Sciences -TWAS Visiting Research Fellow).
Prof Arowolo started his academic career on 1st December, 1983 as an Assistant Lecturer (Analytical Chemistry) in the Chemical Sciences Department of the Federal University of Technology, Abeokuta (now Federal University of Agriculture, Abeokuta) and rose through the ranks to the position of Professor of Analytical and Environmental Chemistry on 1st of October, 2004.
Professor Arowolo's research interest is in the field of environmental monitoring and assessment particularly with respect to the application of analytical methods in the determination of the levels, forms, mobility, fate and modelling of essential trace elements, potentially toxic elements, rare earth elements and organic pollutants in soils, sediments, air, water, plants, food and biological samples. He has published widely in reputable local and international journals and has presented several papers at national and international conferences. Prof Arowolo's research interest has expanded considerably in the past two decades due to the multidisciplinary nature of his work. Consequently, he has collaborated with several Scientists in Nigeria, UK, USA, China, Austria, Jamaica and South Africa during the period.
Professor Arowolo has, over the years, trained students at the undergraduate and postgraduate levels. He has supervised over eighty (80) undergraduate projects and has been a major supervisor to fifteen Masters students and four PhD students. He has also co-supervised several other postgraduate students.
Prof. Arowolo has served as Chairman or member of several academic and administrative committees in the University too numerous to be listed. He was appointed as the
- Head of the Department of Environmental Management & Toxicology between 1995 - 1997 and 2004 – 2006.
- Dean, College of Environmental Resources Management between August, 2006 and July 2011.
- Deputy Vice Chancellor (Academic) between September 2011 and December, 2013.
- Member of the Governing Council of the Federal University of Agriculture, Abeokuta between 2009 and 2013.
Professor Arowolo has served as External Examiner for PhD and MSc candidates in several Universities in Nigeria and one University in South Africa. He has also served on the National University Commission’s accreditation teams to several Universities in the country. He is a regular reviewer for local and international journals. Prof Arowolo has been teaching Analytical Chemistry and Environmental Chemistry for over thirty years and has successfully mentored many undergraduate and postgraduate students.
Professor Arowolo is a member of several Professional Societies including Chemical Society of Nigeria, Science Association of Nigeria and Wastes Management Society of Nigeria. He is the Chairman of Education and Admission Committee of Wastes Management Society of Nigeria and former Chairman of Ogun State Chapter of the Chemical Society of Nigeria. He is also a Fellow of the Chemical Society of Nigeria.
Professor was the first Editor of Global Journal of Environmental Sciences and is one of the current Editors of the Journal of Environmental Chemistry and Ecotoxicology (JECE).
