Jaya Raju is Associate Professor and Head of the Library and Information Studies Centre at the University of Cape Town. She is also an Honorary Associate Professor in the Information Studies Programme at the University of KwaZulu-Natal. She holds a PhD in Information Studies from the former University of Natal (now University of KwaZulu-Natal). She has researched and written extensively in the area of LIS education and its implications for the LIS services work environment, particularly in the African developing context. Her current research focus is the development of LIS competency indices which may be used by practitioners to ascertain existing knowledge and skills and to identify areas for further knowledge and skills acquisition, as well as by LIS educators for curriculum review and revision. Jaya Raju has served on the Editorial Advisory Board of the South African Journal of Libraries and Information Science and is currently the Editor-in-Chief of the journal. She also serves on the Editorial Advisory Board of the Journal for Gender, Information and Development in Africa; International Journal of Information, Diversity & Inclusion; and, De Gruytera's Open Information Science. She is co-editor of the ALISE (Association for Library and Information Science Education) Book Series on LIS education and research. She has published in peer-reviewed national and international journals and has also presented papers at local, national and international conferences (including peer-reviewed conference papers). She is currently Co-Chair of IFLA's Building Strong LIS Education (BSLISE), an active global network of LIS educators and researchers. Jaya Raju recently published (2017), as an open access publication, the outcome of her NRF funded research: LIS professional competency index for the higher education sector in South Africa. She is an NRF rated researcher. In 2018 Jaya Raju was made Subject Chair for Library and Information Science on the Scopus Content Selection & Advisory Board - an international group of scientists and researchers representing major scientific disciplines and tasked with evaluating journals applying for inclusion on Scopus indexing list.
